This is the family film for the month and it's a whopper with great effects and a heartwarming story that may be too intense in some places for younger kids under 5 years old.  The film is based on the book by Wendy Orr and Kerry Millard.

Nim (Abigail Breslin) is a lonely young girl who lives on an island with her scientist father Jack ( Gerard Butler )  in a very Swiss Family Robinson setting and some animal friends, a lizard, a pelican and a sealion.  Nim passes the time by reading books about a dashing adventurer named Alex Rover supposedly written by the adventurer himself.  One day, when Jack's boat is almost totaled by a sudden storm and he does not return from a two day expedition to discover new protozoa, Nim begins corresponding with author Alex Rover who is really agoraphobic germophobe  Alexandra Rover (Jodie Foster) writer of Nim's favorite children's books who has not left her apartment in San Francisco in sixteen months and who has the adventurer as an invisible friend to talk to.   Moreover, Alex only eats Progresso soup and uses about a quart of Purele hand sanitizer a DAY!  As the two of them chat online it becomes evident that Jack may not return, that Nim is alone and slightly injured on the island and that her only hope seems to be for Alexandra to come and rescue her.

More tension comes when The Captain ( Michael Carman ) of a luxury cruise ship decides that the island is a perfect spot to entertain a shipload of his clients. Nim decides that she and her animal buddies must thwart this invasion of their domain just as Alex decides that she must overcome her neurosis and leave for the remote South Pacific island to meet and save this young girl while out in the ocean, Jack is stranded in a leaking boat with limited resources and sharks circling at a distance waiting for the chance to feast.   Yes, a lot of this is improbable, but this IS a children's fantasy book so just suspend disbelief and enjoy.
