The
Addams Family
The beloved
characters created by Charles Addams and appearing regularly in The New
Yorker Magazine, and alive and well on on Broadway. This original story
finds the famously macabre Addams Family put to the test when outsiders
come to dinner, hurling Gomez, Morticia, Wednesday, Pugsley, Fester, Grandmama
and Lurch headlong into a night that will change the family forever. That
irresistable family of creepy 'individuallists' and still living in their
super-spooky mansion in Central Park. The Addams family, led by the elegantly
gaunt and seemingly undead Morticia ( the model for TV's Vampira and Elvira
) and her ever-devoted husband Gomez, is in chaos. Their daughter Wednesday
is now 18 and finds herself falling in love, a sensation that is unsettling
for both her and her family. When Wednesday invites her new boyfriend,
Lucas Beineke, over with his conservative family to get acquainted with
the Addams household, comic chaos, including everything from an amorous
giant squid to mixed-up potions to a scorching tango, ensues. Fans of
Charles Addams’ macabre cartoons, the hit TV show and movies they
inspired will love this musical. The original story and score may be new,
but the iconic characters, including Lurch, Grandmama, Pugsley and Uncle
Fester, revel inthis Broadway romp. In addition to singing and dancing,
this Addams Family is different from other incarnations of the altogether
ooky clan: Wednesday, now coming of age, is no longer simply a pig-tailed
lass with a penchant for torturing her brother Pugsley, and Morticia has
morphed from the picture of cool confidence to a woman faced with her
own mortality and all the anxiety that entails.

Memphis
Memphis is one
of the best shows of the year with an original story, a score you actually
want to hear again, genuine emotions and charismatic lead performances.
Flying under the radar, with no stars but plenty of passion Memphis succeeds
by making us care about star-crossed lovers Huey Calhoun, a white deejay
in 1950s Memphis played with star-making conviction by Chad Kimball, and
Felicia Farrell, an African-American blues singer played by luminous newcomer
Montego Glover. Set in the turbulent south in the 1950s, Memphis is the
story of Huey Calhoun, a white radio DJ whose love of good music transcends
race lines and airwaves. Thanks in part to his passionate persistence,
"race" music reaches the center of the radio dial, quickly exploding
throughout mainstream America. But when Huey falls for a beautiful black
singer he has set on the path to stardom, whether the world is really
ready for this music, and their love, is put to the test. The secret weapon
in this crowd-pleasing musical is David Bryan’s score, written with
lyricist Joe DiPietro. Who knew that a founding member of Bon Jovi would
turn out to be a natural at writing for the stage?

Promises,
Promises.
Promises,
Promises, basedon the Billy Wilder film The Apartment, tells the story
of Chuck Baxter, a charming young employee at the Consolidated Life Insurance
Company who, in an effort to advance at the company, lends executives
his apartment for their extramarital romantic trysts. But, things become
slightly complicated when Fran Kubelik, the object of Chuck’s affection,
becomes the mistress of one of his executives. This show, set in the swingin’
and stylish early 1960's offers up a charming, if morally dubious, hero
in a musical comedy filled with memorable one-liners courtesy of scribe
Neil Simon and infectious pop tunes by songwriting team Burt Bacharach
and Hal David. Though the production looks like a confection, the themes
of infidelity, losing one’s moral compass, unrequited love anchor
it in reality.
