There has never been a dud of a film from the creative
animated studios of Pixar, and “UP” is no exception. So much abounds in
this 3-D animated movie that is so good for the young ones with its numerous
morals, the right way of doing things, loyalty, keeping one’s promise,
and understanding that others have feelings and emotions. It also reminds
the viewer that sometimes, those we build up as idols can be disappointing
when we really get to know them and our real heroes we tend to accept and
take for granted every day.
“UP” traces two individuals from childhood: when they meet, growing up and marrying, and growing old, the two obviously soul mates. Both had in common the interest in the exploits of a famed explorer, their hero, who had to set off on another quest in order to redeem himself of the charges of falsifying the skeletal structures of prehistoric creatures he recently brought back. It’s sad when the wife dies leaving the old man ( Ed Asner ) by himself. He is faced with the prospect of tall buildings going up around him, dwarfing his little house which holds so many memories for him and which he truly calls home. He refuses to give in to the builders to sell his house with its memories. When faced with a catastrophic happening when he overreacted, rather than go to the assisted living home, he ties a great number of helium balloons to his house and proceeds to float away in order to find the South American Paradise Falls which he and his wife were always supposed to go to, the place where the explorer they revered went. Thing is, an annoying young wildlife scout goes up with him before he has a chance of letting him back on terra firma. But each will find in the other a certain bond amid their adventures with talking dogs via a special scientific device placed as a collar around their necks, a rare creature, and a ruthless villain. |

Very much organic and spooky like a Cronenberg thriller,
''Pontypool'' had made quite a name for itself at feilm festivals.
The action is starts when Shock-jock radio D.J. Grant Mazzy (Stephen McHattie ) has, once again, been kicked off the Big City airwaves and now the only job he can get is the early morning show at CLSY Radio in the small town of Pontypool which broadcasts from the basement of the small town's only church. One moring the morning news team starts taking reports of extreme, bloody incidents of violence occurring in town. What begins as another boring day of school bus cancellations due to yet another massive snow storm quickly becomes deadly. As the story unfolds, the radio staff soon realizes the violence that is ripping society apart is due to a virus being spread through the English language. That in turn poses a problem for a yappy radio jock and his staff holed up in the broadcast booth housed in the basement of the town's abandoned church as a slaughter rages beyond its walls. Bizarre reports start piling in of people developing strange speech patterns and committing horrendous acts of violence. But there's nothing coming in on the news wires. So...is this really happening? Before long, Grant and the small staff at CLSY find themselves trapped in the radio station as they discover that this insane behavior taking over the town is caused by a deadly virus that may be spreading as a direct result of their radio transmissions... Now they must shut up or die.... |
