''Creation"  Reviewed by Andrew Johnson.   Edited by R. Allen Leider

“You have killed God!” An associate of Charles Darwin utters this very statement when told that Darwin’s “The Origin of the Species” will soon be  published.

“CREATION,” a film based on Darwin’s great, great-grandson Randal Keynes’ book, “Annie’s Box,” recalls the great struggles that faced Darwin in finishing his legendary book, the very foundation of evolutionary biology. Even his wife, a religious woman, found it hard to embrace his research, but she stood by him in what he believed and gave to the world. On the first day of his book’s publication, it completely sold out.

British actor Paul Bettany plays the controversial man of science whose local minister and friend, played by Jeremy Northam, takes great issue with the research and conclusions of Darwin. Jennifer Connelly ( Bettany's real-life wife ) plays Darwin’s wife, and there are two other key performances, one by Toby Jones and the other by newcomer Martha West who plays Darwin’s 10 year old daughter, very much interested in her father’s work and with whom he confers. Trouble is, only he sees her as she died well before the film begins its story. Characters are well defined and the acting quite good.

The book which this man wrote was an explosive one indeed in a time when the church expounded the fact that man was God’s separate and most precious creation. Throughout the 150 years since the book was published, there is still the cry: Are we to believe that an ape is a distant relative? Over 125 years since his death, his work concerning natural selection still inspires a world shaped by his ideas. But controversy and debate exist in our present day, despite scientific evidence that now exists, thanks to DNA research and genetics. It’s true today as it was in his time as someone in the film states: “Science is at war with religion.”

Darwin is portrayed throughout the film as being sickly, but remarkably seems to fully recover with the book off to the publisher. He also lives in a fine house, though run-down, but never is it revealed where he gets the money to support his family, lifestyle with servants, his research, or the trips he takes abroad. He is told, “You are at war with God. It’s a battle you cannot win,” but he goes on in his belief and research at the expense of his non-interaction with his family. He always seems to come to life when he speaks with daughter Annie, an illusion to reality which he has created.

The trials and tribulations and utter suffering in being wrapped up in his work are well depicted in this motion picture. We’re shown a household that’s chaotic and full of shadows and secrets. Director Jon Amiel has included the finest detail in telling the tale. It’s all a very factual in-depth insight into the man and his findings, beautifully photographed, but a film that has no life whatsoever. Were they all such drab and dull people? A rather sad and depressing life for the Darwins and for this motion picture as well. It’s just lifeless on the screen causing the audience to fidget and fight off the feeling of drowsiness. The story has a great deal of substance, but just doesn’t work (at least for me) as a film going experience. What a pity with the time, effort, and detail put into it!

                                                 ''Tooth Fairy"
Tidy little kids flick featuring the time-tested combo of a cute girl, cameo stars and an action hero. Schwarzenegger, Stallone, Hulk Hogan, and other he-men ( most recently martial arts champ Jackie Chan ) have gone this route so it's only logical that The Rock would too.

When tough minor-league hockey player Derek ( Dwayne Johnson ) tells 6 year-old Tess ( Destiny Whitlock ) that the tooth fairy isn't real it results in an unusual sentence: He must serve one week as a real-life tooth fairy. Now, this is not easy for Derek, as he has a reputation for knocking out his opponent's teeth with his stick, a fact that curls the hair of head fairy Lily ( Julie Andrews ). Add to that having to deal with kids and you have a real dilemma for the terror of the ice rink.
